is the establishment of a forest or stand of trees in an area where the preceding vegetation or land use was not forest

The United Nations General Assembly declared 2011 as the International Year of Forests to raise awareness on sustainable management, conservation and sustainable development of all types of forests.

Forests have multiple values: they provide shelter to people and habitat to biodiversity; are a source of food, medicine and clean water and play a vital role in maintaining a stable global climate and environment. All of these elements taken together reinforce the message that forests are vital to the survival and wellbeing of people everywhere, all 7 billion of us.

All members of the UN are invited to participate and organize various events and activities during the 2011, on national and international level, celebrating the international Year of Forests. The goal is to spread awareness and to educate the public about the benefits which forest ecosystems provide for the whole world and all the segments of the human life.

EuroEnviro 2011 organizers have decided to take part in celebrating the International Year of Forests and are in cooperation with the Croatian Mountaineering Society Matica, the Croatian Pharmaceutical Society and Hrvatske šume (Croatian Forests) organizing afforestation of the forest Medak, near Gospić. Action will take place on the 9 April 2011 and everybody is invited to participate and contribute - planting a tree for a better life on Earth!
